Ventimiglia is a commercial and tourist town and a very important railway and road juction because of the near french border. It is also an agricultural and floricultural market.
Inhabited since the prehistoric age (finds and graffiti in Balzi Rossi caves), it was a Roman colony; it flourished during the seigniory of the Counts of Ventimiglia and it has been part of the Genovese Republic. In 1814 it was annexed to the Kingdom of Sardinia and later to the Kingdom of Italy.
The results of all these vicissitudes can be found in the cultural heritage of the town: the medieval zone, the defensive walls, Vergine Assunta's Cathedral, San Michele's Church with its Romanesque crypt, the Episcopal Palace, the Counts' Castle, the San Paolo fort, the Biancheri Tower.
Today, Ventimiglia offers to visitors a vast range of services; thanks to temperate climate, the coast has developed with hotels, campings, bathing establishment, sport equipments. Meeting places are all there: bars, discos and restaurants which offer rich fish-based menus and refined Ligurian cooking with a great choice of wines.
A commercial centre, shops, artisans' workshops. And don't forget to visit Hambury Gardens: they are famous for the preciousness of flora and the variety of esotic species.
