PUERTO RICO: Vieques

Hakuna Matata is the name of a house that overlooks the world famous Bio Bay on Vieques. Vieques is an island roughly four miles wide (6,43 km) x 21 miles (33,79 km) long located eight miles (12,87 km) off the eastern shore of Puerto Rico. As part of the Puerto Rico, no passport or currency exchanges are necessary for visitors from the United States.

Vieques is truly an island paradise featuring stunning displays of natural beauty, clear clean water, bright blue sky, and a vast array of magnificent beaches. Vieques also boasts one of the most desirable year round climates to be found anywhere in the world.

Hakuna Matata is located high on a hill in the Barrio of Destino. Due to its hillside location almost smack dab in the center of the island, spectacular views of both the sunrise and the sunset are daily events. In the late afternoon, a cool, refreshing breeze comes in off the ocean signaling the stars filled night sky that is to come.

The primary source of revenue on Vieques is tourism. All of what a tourist might expect to find on a Caribbean vacation, you will find in Vieques. Great restaurants, cocktails by the sea, and the full gamut rental activities from sailboats and kayaks to bicycles and snorkeling gear.
However, what sets Vieques apart from the other tourist destinations of the Caribbean is a life-style that has not been pushed aside for more commercially viable attractions. There are no Marriott’s, casinos, wholesale outlets, or retail franchises on Vieques. Vieques is more in keeping with a reverence for the environment and staying in pace with the island’s age-old, natural rhythms. No need to wear a watch while on Vieques. The tides will tell you all you need to know about the time. Going someplace? As long as you can keep pace with the white billowing clouds that drift lazily overhead, you should get to wherever you want to go on Vieques with plenty of time to spare.

Vieques is decidedly laid back; one might say down right backward in its resistance to anything that might threaten the island’s unique blend of modern day awareness and the island’s naturally aged legacy. The result is a slower, more relaxed interface with creative energies both near-at-hand and far removed from everyday life.

Horseback riding, yoga classes and massages are the island's favorites. Artists and crafts people of every description from everywhere in the world have come to Vieques to indulge their creative appetites in this special something only Vieques has to offer.

My name is Richard Bambery. I was born in Chicago in 1951. I graduated from Cranwell School in 1970. I received my B.A. in English from Midddlebury College in 1976. I worked for small advertising agencies in Chicago and New York before becoming a freelance photographer in 1977 and then founded Light Studio in Lenox, Massachusetts in 1978. For the next 35 years I split my time between free-lance assignments in NYC and my studio in Lenox. I have two children, Alexandra and Max. I am retired but I still do some phography and enjoy writing. Life is good!

Region:  Some things on Vieques take a little getting used to; driving a car for instance can be an adventure. On Vieques, it’s often difficult to tell where the road ends and the off-road begins. Pedestrians and of course the horses always have the right of way. There are no stop lights on the island. Stop signs apparently are also in short supply. Hand signals, driver to driver, seem to work well enough at the intersections, and most potential hazards are neutralized by staying within the island's speed limit - 30-35 mph (50-60 kmh). The prevailing attitude when it comes to getting around on the island is summed up rather succinctly on a popular bumper sticker, "You're on Vieques. What's the Rush?"

Location:  Hakuna Matata is located in the Barrio Destino situated almost directly in the center of the island. Almost everything on the island is within a 10-15 minute-drive by car, including many of the beaches, most of the restaurants, the shopping areas, et

Closest airport:  Antonio Rivera Rodríguez Airport, Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico. The Airport in Vieques is a small commercial air facility owned by the Puerto Rico Port Authority and a hub for small local airline companies.
